Dr. Alex Powell is a tenor who has performed throughout North America and Europe. As a long-time member of the Handel and Haydn Society Chorus, he performed on numerous recordings and in live concerts at Boston’s Symphony Hall and Jordan Hall. He has sung with Philovox, Orpheus Singers, Boston Cecilia, and Boston Secession, and was a member of the London Symphony Chorus. He has been a featured soloist in oratorio performances and is passionate about art song repertoire and completed the master course in poetry and performance at the Franz Schubert Institute in Austria. 

 

In addition to his classical music career, Dr. Powell has experience in musical theater, jazz, country, bluegrass, and folk. He performed for two summers in a country music review show at Dollywood and recorded background vocals and demos in Nashville for six years.

Dr. Powell earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Boston University, a Graduate Diploma from the New England Conservatory, a Master of Music from Belmont University, and a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in History and Music from the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Powell was on the faculty of Nashville State Community College, served as conductor of the Conservatory Chamber Choir at the Longy School of Music of Bard College, and has taught as a private voice instructor for many years.

With more than fifteen years of experience in college and conservatory administration, Dr. Powell is recognized as a national expert in college admissions in the performing arts. He has worked for the Cleveland Institute of Music, New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, and the Longy School of Music of Bard College. He served as an adjudicator for Classical Singer, NEC concerto competitions, Boston Lyric Opera, and VoicesBoston, and has been on panels for hundreds of conservatory auditions.
